Applications in drinking water treatment

Water treatment in industrial cooling towers
Among disinfectants, halogenated bromine-based compounds are also used are frequently used in cooling towers. Widely used since the 1970s, sodium bromide's function is to reinforce the effectiveness of chlorinated biocides in excessively alkaline water. In June 2022, this compound was classified as CMR category 2 ((H373, H361, H36). Sodium bromide is suspected of harming reproduction and the healthy development of the fetus. Eventually, it could be classified as a category 1 CMR under European harmonization. Users of this type of treatment are obliged to take this development into account. There are 2 solutions to consider: implementing the obligations linked to the use of a CMR product (CMR chemical agents. Regulations - Risks – INRS) or replacing Sodium Bromide.
This news is yet another warning to the world of industry. For several years now, water agencies and regional directorates for the environment, development and housing have been urging industrialists to use water-treatment solutions that are more respectful of the environment and the human being.
LUTZ JESCO electrolyzers offer an alternative solution to bromine bleach and allow the production of a stable sodium hypochlorite solution of between 6 and 8 g/L. This dilute solution of freshly-produced bleach minimizes bacteriological growth in cooling tower circuits at lower treatment rates than those achieved with pure bleach. Electrolyzers make operators' day-to-day work easier, since there's no need to handle chemicals or transport hazardous materials.
