Pumps for used frying fat

An eccentric screw pump from Lutz-Jesco helps the operator of a wastewater treatment plant to pump used frying fat from drums and containers into an integrated digestion tower. Here we explain how the pump impresses with its performance, reliability and durability. From frying chips, schnitzel and fish: the operator of a wastewater treatment plant in Salzburg was faced with the challenge of feeding used frying fat delivered in drums and containers into a digestion tower. To this end, the operator set out to find a suitable feed pump, which did not turn out to be an easy task.

The challenge: the feed pump needs to be able to reliably handle viscous, sticky fat

The special properties of fat from deep-frying place high demands on pump technology. It has a high viscosity, especially at low temperatures. It often contains food residue, carbon particles and other solids, which further impede pumpability. Oxidation can also produce complex, high-molecular compounds that make the fat even more viscous and sticky.

These resinous substances can become deposited on the inner walls of the pumps. This impedes the mobility of mechanical components and reduces the delivery capacity, whilst increasing energy consumption and accelerating wear. Oxidation products can also have a corrosive impact, damaging metallic components. This results in downtime and high repair costs.

The solution: an eccentric screw pump from Lutz-Jesco that impresses with its performance, reliability and durability

Thanks to Lutz-Jesco, the company operating the digestion tower finally found a suitable pump for processing the used frying fat. A successful pumping test convinced them to opt for the B70V50.1 eccentric screw pump. The pump has been specially designed to convey media with a viscosity of up to 100,000 mPas. Achieving a delivery capacity of up to 3,000 litres per hour, it provides a delivery pressure of up to 8 bar. With a nominal size of 1200 mm, it is ideal for use in deep containers or tanks.

In order to improve the flow behaviour of the used frying fat and thereby simplify the pumping process, the operator decided to fit the removal containers with a heating collar.

The company operating the digestion tower was impressed not only by the performance of the eccentric screw pump, but also by its durability. The housing and all parts that come into contact with the media are made of robust stainless steel. This makes the pump highly resistant to corrosion and aggressive media.

Another advantage is its modular design, which allows easy access to wearing parts. The rapid service provided by Lutz-Jesco ensures that spare parts are available within 24 hours, thereby minimising downtimes. For the operator of the digestion tower, the B70V50.1 pump was the ideal choice for conveying used frying fats into the digestion tower.
