Technology for the development of alternative drinking water sources

Wertheim, March 18, 2025 - The motto of the United Nations World Water Day on March 22, 2025 is "Preserving Glaciers". A topic that is also relevant because glaciers play an important role in the drinking water supply for millions of people. They feed rivers and lakes with water, especially during periods of low rainfall, thus ensuring sufficient water levels. At the same time, it is important to prepare for the use of alternative sources of drinking water in order to be able to guarantee supplies in the future, emphasizes Heinz Lutz, Managing Director of Lutz-Jesco, a company from Wertheim that specializes in drinking water technology.

Glaciers are retreating worldwide due to climate change. As a result, many regions are losing dynamic reservoirs that cyclically supply rivers and groundwater reservoirs with fresh water. "In many areas, such as parts of Asia, South America and Europe, glaciers are an important source of drinking water. It is therefore crucial for the people affected to counteract the dramatic decline in ice masses - in particular by reducingCO2 emissions," explains Heinz Lutz, Managing Director of Lutz Holding GmbH. "In addition, the affected regions should also prepare to make greater use of alternative water sources such as rainwater and surface water. However, as these sources can often be more contaminated with pollutants, microplastics and chemical impurities, technologies for safe water treatment are of key importance."

Mobile chlorination system enables rapid disinfection of drinking water in remote regions, for example

Lutz-Jesco has been developing water treatment technology for decades, which is used in drinking water plants all over the world - including filter, disinfection and dosing systems. However, the portfolio also includes mobile technologies that demonstrate their advantages in the treatment of alternative water sources. The SAFETYCHLORMIX, for example, is a plug-and-play chlorination system that is mounted on a hand truck. This means that a single person can easily bring the system to the site and start chlorination for drinking water treatment. At the heart of the system is a MAGDOS series diaphragm dosing pump, which injects a calcium hypochlorite solution into the contaminated water to kill or inactivate bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. "Thanks to its mobile design, the system can be used flexibly, especially in areas where fast and reliable disinfection of drinking water is required - for example when supplying water in remote regions" or for short-term measures, says Lutz.

New control cabinet operates disinfection systems with solar energy

Disinfection systems for drinking water treatment from Lutz-Jesco can now even be used in places where no electricity is available. This is where a new product called Solarhub comes into play, a solar power plant that operates the pumps and disinfection systems using solar energy. "We deliver the solar system completely preconfigured with all the necessary components for operation. This includes solar panels, a battery charge controller, an inverter, an electricity storage unit and the cabling," says Lutz. All components are coordinated with each other so that users can use the solar power plant immediately and reliably without having to deal with complex technical details. "Technologies like this can help to develop alternative sources of drinking water in times of glacier retreat, especially in remote areas."
