Lime-carbonic acid equilibrium in public water works

Some of the components in drinking water react with each other and form new chemical compounds. These reactions depend on the ratio of the components in the water. The chemical equilibrium between two such components, carbon dioxide and calcium carbonate, is referred to as the "lime-carbonic acid equilibrium". This essentially determines the lime precipitation / take-up into solution character of the water. A stable equilibrium is important to ensure consistent quality of the drinking water.
